Thomas J. Pierry, III

 

Thomas J. Pierry, III was admitted to the California Bar as a lawyer in 1987. That same year he became an associate in the Firm of Magana, Cathcart, McCarthy & Pierry, out of which Pierry & Moorhead, LLP evolved. He has specialized in personal injury litigation and workers compensation cases throughout his career.

In his first few years of practice, Tom assisted his father, Thomas J. Pierry, Sr., and participated in several cases resulting in settlements or verdicts of over a million dollars. In 1995, Tom successfully argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in the case of a longshore woman, resulting in a new, favorable law for injured longshore workers.

In 1995 and 1997, Tom appeared before the United States Supreme Court in the case of an injured longshore worker. On the second occasion, in 1997, he presented the oral presentation before the United States Supreme Court, which resulted in a new, favorable law for longshore workers.

Tom has also represented numerous merchant marine seamen and their families over the years, as well as Social Security disability claims and automobile accident cases. In 1995, Mr. Thomas J. Pierry, III and his father were the trial attorneys in a Federal Court case involving an injured worker who became a paraplegic which resulted in a $10,000,000.00 verdict. Recently in October and November of 1999, he was one of the trial attorneys representing the family of a 66 year old longshore foreman who was killed on the job, which resulted in a verdict of nearly $1,200,000.00.
